What is ChipmarkChipmark is an online bookmark manager that allows you to access your bookmarks from any computer, anywhere. Chipmark is run by students at the University of Minnesota as part of a year long course on open-source software development. To learn more about us, please check out the about page.
Why should I use Chipmark?Chipmark allows you to take your bookmarks with you wherever you go. Wether you're at home, at work, or at school, Chipmark allows you to see, store, search, and share your bookmarks. Chipmark is also totally free and free of annoying advertising.
What do I need to use Chipmark?Almost nothing! Chipmark has three interfaces: the web, a Firefox extension, and an Internet Explorer plug-in. Any modern broswer with javascript and cookies enabled should be able to use one of our interfaces. We do not currently support plug-ins/extensions for any browsers but Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
What is a plug-in/extension?A plug-in/extension is a piece of software which enables you to use Chipmark directly from your toolbar instead of visiting the website. This is generally a more familiar and flexible way to use your bookmarks. In fact, it is just like a browser's built-in bookmarking capabilites. Most of our users use either the Firefox extension or the Internet Explorer plug-in.
How does Chipmark work? When you add a bookmark (or import your existing bookmarks), the information is sent to our protected server. We then store the bookmark in a secure database. When you access your bookmarks through Chipmark, they are retrieved from the database.
May I help with Chipmark? We are an open-source project so we welcome feedback and help. We also have a public API available on our Community page. Feel free to contact us if you like to contribute to the Chipmark community.
Can I load my existing bookmarks into Chipmark?Yes.
Why would I want to make my Chipmarks public?Chipmark gives you the option to specify whether your bookmarks are "Public" or "Private". Making your bookmarks "Public" allows other Chipmark users to make use of them through our built-in searching capabilities. We encourage you to designate as "Private" any bookmarks that others might find offensive.
What are labels?"Labels" are another form of organizing your bookmarks - we currently support both a hierarchical folder structure and labels. Labels can currently be used in our built-in search features and can be used to filter your Chipmarks on the label view of our Website. Our Firefox and Internet Explorer browser extensions offer the ability to use specific labels to create toolbar links like those common in most browsers.
What does "Error opening file for writing" mean when installing the Internet Explorer toolbar? The Internet Explorer Toolbar uses a DLL file that is used by both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer, so if any folders or browser windows are opened, you will not be able to update the file. Close all the folder and browser windows and press retry; installation should continue normally then.
Why is the Chipmark toolbar in the Firefox extension blank? The Internet Explorer Toolbar uses a DLL file that is used by both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer, so if any folders or browser windows are opened, you will not be able to update the file. Close all the folder and browser windows and press retry; installation should continue normally then.
Where did all my Chipmarks go?If you cannot display your Chipmarks, you may have added a Chipmark which contains "special characters" (non-English characters). In some cases, these characters break the display scripts. Edit recent Chipmarks in label view to remove these characters, and attempt to view your Chipmarks again. If you are still unable to view your Chipmarks, send email to contact us.
Will my accout ever expire? Not if you use it! As of January '07, we will delete any user who is inactive for at least a year. So, all you have to do is use Chipmark once every twelve months and you are okay! If your account gets deleted, you can always register a new account and import all your old bookmarks.
