Chipmark is constantly growing and evolving. We add new features in our major releases, and sometimes this means new bugs. If you think you have found a bug, please post about it here and we will try and fix it in our next release.

don't know if this qualifies as a bug but this has happened maybe 3 times since i've been using chipmarks.
the little "chipmark this page" icon turns "off" at some point and there is no way to turn it back on. you cannot chipmark a page. it's there on the toolbar, but the light is out. it has gone grey.
    thanx , rajuur

If it's the Firefox version, here is a similar post:

This bug is being fixed in our 3.2 maintenance release.

I'm not sure but... I think that rajuur meant to:

the little "chipmark this page" icon button turns "off" at...
it's there on the toolbar Navigation Toolbar, but the light is out. it has gone grey.
...the LIGHT is out. it has gone GREY.

    ?!?

Hi, I installed this hoping it would cure a bug in firefox (also foxmarks) I just did a reinstall and exported my old bookmarks to a "json" file. I can open it in a text browser, but nothing else seems to open it.

    @sodasound -

When you export your bookmarks, there should be an option to export them as HTML instead of JSON. If you save them as the HTML format they will import into Chipmark just fine. Creating a JSON upload method is on our list of todos for the next release. Thanks for reporting this, and sorry for the delayed response. The 2008-2009 team just took over the project and we're still sorting through all of the forum posts and bug reports that came in over the summer. If you have anything else, please don't hesitate to let us know!

    Thanks,

I'm afraid I have to weigh in on this. I love chipmarks. It does exactly what I want. That is, it allows me to have my bookmarks on any pc.

Unfortunately the new alpha, which has been around for quite some time now, has two very glaring bugs that I'm quite surprised the dev team hasn't cleared for themselves, if not the other users.

1: Opening a new browser window (ctrl N or a webmail popup for instance) generates about 5 popup messages stating the app is unhappy because of being unable to communicate with the server. This replicates on any windows install of FF3 I've tried it on (over 20 [I touch a lot of PC's in my job]). Doesn't seem to happen on FF3 for linux at all.

2: As someone else has mentioned, it 'stickies' the mouseover text for pictures and links. What in the heck is a bookmarking app even DOING with that information in memory to begin with?

While I'm a die-hard (due to having quite literally a thousand or so chipmarks), and just click 'ok' FIVE TIMES every time I open a new browser window, and also have the same mouseover from four days ago on every link/picture; other people who either use my computer or watch over my shoulder when I want to say... Browse YouTube(tm) think my computer is broken and I have a virus.

I'm beginning to believe them. I know this thing is free, but I love it... Please reduce features that invade privacy, and just make it do the things version 1.0 did if you have to... But make it WORK.

I'm a developer and fully understand 'feature creep'. Sometimes we have to cut down some code and get the basics working, even though it makes us sad.

I agree with you, tekgnosis, these are the two issues that annoys me most when using Chipmarks on FF3. I still use it, though, best bookmarking solution I found. Available, fast and.. huh, not that stable, but I can live with it for a bit more. :)

One more thingie, which I reported on another topic here: when trying to edit chipmarks using the FF3 extension, it freezes the browser, then I have to kill FF3 using task manager. So, when I'm on FF3 and want to edit my CM's, I must use the web interface.

Now a nice feature that exists in the FF2 extension and could be ported to the FF3's one: when adding a Chipmark, you could add it straight to the folder/sub-folder you want. It is a nice one, avoids you to have rearranging/sorting the Chipmarks later. For now it adds just to the root folder, then you have to put it where you want later using the web interface.

I post this just looking forward to help you, devs. :)

You can use The "Chipmark this page" bookmarklet by Mikster (see also: "Unfiled Chipmarks" Folder).

    Hi everyone -

Thanks again for the detailed bug descriptions. They'll help Chris and I a lot in our testing as we continue working on the FF3 extension. I did want to make it clear that there is nothing in the chipmark code that is scanning your pages and explicitly saving the mouse over text. The chipmark API is open source and available from the home page if you would like to verify this yourself. We have observed this side effect too and we are trying to pin down the issue. I appreciate the comments about avoiding feature creep and keeping chipmark simple to avoid bugs. Rest assured that our focus for this semester is to drive out as many bugs as we can. We will not be implementing any new features until we are satisfied with the performance of the products that are currently available. We also have to start thinking about the release of IE 8, which will likely be a major project for us next semester. As always, we'll keep you posted and we always appreciate your input.

I used to be able to drag-and-drop bookmarks, but a few days ago, drag-and-drop stopped working. It does not work on any computer I have tried it on, and I have tried on two home machines and 3 different work machines. For that reason, it doesn't seem to be a client side problem. Did something go haywire on the server? When will drag-and-drop become available again? (sorry for double-posting)

oops... I have since figured out how to move bookmarks. It requires use of the RIGHT mouse button, even though a "shadow icon" (for lack of the proper term), indicating a copy or move operation, appears when the left button is used to drag a bookmark. Nothing actually happens when using the left button except that the destination directory opens. There is also a trick to using the mouse. Everything must be done VERY slowly, otherwise nothing happens. You've got to hold the right button down on the icon beside the bookmark, and wait at least several seconds before moving, etc. Frustratingly slow, but it can be done. Also, it seems there may be a limit on the amount of bookmark moving that can be done in a given session (?). After several dozen consecutive moves (from one Chipmark folder to another), the Chipmark web page seemed to lock up, and then my browser (Firefox 3) crashed and was unable to restore the open tabs upon restart. This happened twice, about 20 minutes apart. Perhaps the lockup/crash was caused by trying to work too fast(??) (Again, apologies for double posting.)

    I'm running:
    Chipmark 3.3Beta2 using
    Firefox 3.0.5 on
    OS X 10.5.6

I notice that Chipmarks appears twice in the menu at the top of the screen - both instances to the left of Bookmarks.

The first menu instance has all of my bookmarks. The second only these items: Loading, Chipmark Homepage, and About Chipmark.

I assume that this is due to code from on older version? Any way to fix it?

@jddreistadt: Is this in the web interface or the manage chipmarks window? Also, are you using Windows, Linus, or OSX?

@ctobola: We know about the OS X problems. They will be fixed in the next release. Its not actually code from the older version still sitting there. It's caused be some miscommunication between our XUL file and Firefox for Safari that doesn't occur on Windows and Linux. Unfortunately, there is no work around for now. Thanks for reporting it though.

    Abby,
Sorry for the long delay. The problems were taking place in the manage chipmarks window opened from the Firefox dropdown menu. I am using Chipmarks on Firefox 3.0.7 on WinXP SP3. Hardware: Intel Core2 Duo 3ghz CPU, 2gb RAM.

    Hi jdd,

I tried to duplicate your problem, (granted I was on Firefox on Linux not windows) using the latest version of the plugin. I was unable to get the same results. I was able to drag and drop using the left mouse button as expected.

I know the old manage chipmarks window had some issues with browser timeout issues. How long did you leave your manage chipmarks window open before attempting to rearrange your chipmarks?

HElp...Like Teknosis above I get the pop ups. I cannot bkmk ( chipmark) anything since hitting chipmark this only brings the lil turds back up ( errors). When I tried to open MY chipmarks on the toolbar ( inbox) It is locked. Nothing happens except those pop ups... it is getting quite annoying and I have been suffering for months......

I am using Win Xp and a FF browser.
My daughter has the same OS upstairs and I have no problems when I use her PC....Whats up with that?

Kccat - Please make sure you have the most recent version. The most recent version is 3.3.6 and can be downloaded from
https://www.chipmark.com/firefox/chipmark-v.3.3.6.xpi. This is NOT the version that you can pull officially from Mozilla. We're working on updating that as I type this.

good to know. Thanks again for posting this. We'll update our installation instructions to reflect this workaround
  4.
I haven't been using Chipmarks for a couple of months, but recently a hectic work schedule (bringing work home) has pushed me back to using Chipmarks again. To my surprise, dozens of my Chipmarks have disappeared. 1) I chipmarked about 10 pages on amazon while at work. Everything looked fine at work, but when I got home, all but one of my new Chipmarks were gone. Then I tried to go to the folders where I had been having the drag-and-drop problems a few months ago, and they have completely disappeared! So I went to the web UI to see if they would show up there, but they weren't there either. Probably 50-75 Chipmarks gone. (A list of books I had been putting together for purchasing). Since there is an update out, I will give that a try. Maybe that will take care of the problem. But is there some way for users to backup their Chipmarks?
  5.
Hmm... The Firefox addons page says the currently available Chipmark addon is for an older version of Firefox. (I'm rinning Virefox v.3.0.10 - on WinXP). So I went to the Chipmark site to get the 3.6.6 update, but clicking the download link results in an error from Tomcat stating:
[The requested resource (/firefox/chipmark-v.3.3.6.xpi) is not available.]
However, it actually does seem to be available, because when I right-clicked I was able to download the .xpi file. But now that I've got it I can't figure out how to install it. Any suggestions?
